Indianapolis Dealers Expo 2008

Since I was close to Indianapolis, between 2 planes, I had to pay a very fast visit to the Dealers Expo, the ultimate extravaganza for the powersports industry. Thanks to Dennis Johnson from Dealers News I got a press pass in less time than it takes to ask for one. Thanks to Ryan Simpson for not missing any driving direction to the show. And also thanks to Pam Proctor who mapped my visit so that I didn’t get lost and lose time inside the huge RCA Dome. It’s the way I was able to meet in a record time with a few friends of the V-Twin industry that I missed 2 weeks ago at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo. On the Avon display, the new Cobra tires were explained to me. They are replacing the Venom R in most sizes from 150/16" to 130/23" for the front, and from 180/16" to 280/20" for the rear . On the Progressive Suspension booth I looked again at their cool new shocks with turn signals incorporated. A few yards away, Cory Ness was displaying his new RedNess bike (his painter picked and painted this name without informing Cory! So, it’s going to be changed). This new custom is gorgeous with superb flowing lines, unbelievable wheels, a never seen before front end, and tons of very neat tricks. For me the best custom ever built by Cory and I told him. On the Performance Machine display I spotted an awesome new narrow primary and a new wheel, both making you desire to start building a bike just to feature them. I saluted a few other friends, and left the RCA Dome with enough info and pictures to feature in details all these parts in soon to be published new posts. The crowd was huge, giving me back a renewed sense of confidence about the future of my industry And guess what? I didn’t miss my plane back to Florida.

A Visit To ABATE.

Today I am in Indianapolis, IN, and later this Saturday I will make an appearance at the Liberty ABATE of Illinois. I am a guest at their 21st anniversary party, and it’s a good pretext to tell you a little bit about this national coalition dedicated to preserving the rights of all motorcyclists and educating about motorcycling and safety. First, for those who don’t know, ABATE means “American Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education” or “American Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments”.  The main objective of ABATE is to "Educate, Not Legislate." They believe in the education of all who are involved with motorcycling, including but not limited to, their own members, legislators, law enforcement officials and the general public. Education topics include motorcycle safety and awareness, current laws that affect riders and pending legislation that could change the way you enjoy your freedoms. ABATE also encourages their members to help with community charity events, and always promote a positive image of motorcyclists. There are ABATE chapters all over the US (Google ABATE & your state) and I encourage you to be a member and participate (This image was published in the early 70’s by Easyriders Magazine. It says ".Maybe now you ‘ll think twice about riding without a helmet")

2008 IronWorks Innovation Award Winners

It’s Awards season. During the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati IronWorks Magazine proudly announced the winners of the 2008 Innovation Awards (made by Pat Patterson of Led Sled Customs in Dayton, OH). These Awards are given to companies who have created outstanding new products for motorcycles. The award recipients are selected by the editors of IronWorks who review each product based on its uniqueness and usefulness to the rider. Each trophy, also known as “The Stempy”, is awarded in honor of the co-founder and editor of the magazine Dennis Stemp who passed away several years ago. His wife, Marilyn, is one of the editors who continue his vision by helping select the winners. The winners are: Big Bear Choppers for its GTX Custom Bagger, Metzeler for its ME880 24” and 21” Tires, Hawg Halters, Inc. for the RoadLok MID Sniper Caliper, and S&S Cycle Inc. for its Sealed Air-Cleaner Kit. Featured is executive director of IronWorks Marilyn Stemp giving a “Stempy” to Brett Smith, President of S&S Cycles.

OCC’s 2 New Limited Production Bikes

Before the V-twin Expo, I told you that OCC would unveil during the show 2 new productions bikes. Here they are, the way I saw them in Cincinnati.  A bagger called the OCC SR Cruiser and a Softail type bike named the OCC Sweet Amber. The OCC SR Cruiser has the classic characteristic lines of a bagger with some specificities: bigger storage than usual for the saddlebags with twin exhaust pipes that exit out the side of each bag, and an EPA-certified X-wedge engine and a rear 240 mm tire. OCC qualifies it as a new-school roadster. The OCC Sweet Amber has quite sexy curves out of a traditional Softail frame. Oil tank is mounted under the transmission as late model Harleys, front end is of the type 2” thick Springer, and the bike rolls on original OCC flow-cut chrome wheels, 21” front and 240 mm rear. An EPA-certified engine is also the powerplant of this OCC limited edition production For more information go to OCC Motorcycles

Daytona March 4th. Iron Works Magazine Ride-In-Bike Show

Carl Speed Shop is a cool place to hang around during Daytona Bike Week (a lot of parking place and the opportunity to say hello to the Carl Morrow family, holder of not less than 166 national and world speed records). It will even be more exciting March 4th, from 12 to 4 PM when custom bikes line-up to compete in the Iron Works Magazine Ride-In-Bike Show. And you already know that in addition of prizes and trophies, the very nice staff of the magazine will look for the best of you (your bikes) to be pictured in their pages. This show is for anyone with a custom,  a factory Harley (Pre-Evo, Evo, Twin-Cam, Semi Custom Bagger, Full Custom Bagger) and Big Dog Motorcycles (Most miles, Pre-2000, Most Miles 2000 to present, Most Miles traveled to Daytona). Wiring Harness. Avoid The Madness.

Each custom builder has his forte and his weaknesses. And me, I have no patience to do electrical work. And I know that many among you, pro or not, feel the same.  Anything that can help save time and mistakes is welcome.  Like this wiring harness conceived to satisfy all your needs even if you wire a bike with all the instrumentation required by your unfriendly US State or country. To avoid madness at electrical time, this wiring harness is not only coded to match an OEM Harley wiring diagram, but also features wires silk screened every 3 inch with each function  clearly indicated. This will take all the guesswork out of wiring your bike, especially if you do internal wiring in frame, handlebars, etc. The kit includes 20 gauge coated wire weather resistant momentary key start switch. 30 Amp main circuit breaker and two 15amp breakers. Bosch starter relay. Wiring system provides headlight cutout while starting. Also provided is heat shrink and all necessary wire connectors. The harness is designed to be mounted on the frame or inside the frame tubing. Wires are made with factory connections whenever possible but the opposite ends are left open to pull through frame and/or cut to length. If you are running outside just cut to length install heat shrink and solder ends. For sale at Scooters Performance.

A New Custom Shop Of Love And Hate

A new custom shop? Cool. By beginners? Not really. Love Hate Choppers (LHC) is the association of renowned tattoo artist Ami James (Miami Ink TV show) with master custom builder Marlowe B. They opened shop on Washington Avenue in South Beach Miami (of course), are wrenching their first bikes with hard core styling and finesse in the details, and are getting ready to hit Daytona where the duo will display at the Seminole Hard Rock Road House outside the Dog House Bar & Grill at 601 Main Street (from February 29 to March). Love Hate Choppers.

New Smuggler Wheel

It’s getting more and more difficult to find a motorcycle wheel whose design cannot be confused with one of the multiple variations offered by a dozen manufacturers. This one has its own “personality”, reason why I like it. This one-piece “SMUGGLER” wheel is simple, different, and can be ordered in ten interchangeable billet spokes The wheel can be finished in the same or contrast look from the spokes.  Many sizes available.  Contact on my behalf  RMD BILLET at 507-348-8877 or visit them at RMD Billet.

Hug Shirts To Light Up Your Valentine’s Day

Come within hugging distance of your significant other (I learned that it is supposed to be 6 ft or 2 meters for my European readers) and these pixilated hearts begin to flash. Proof that you are in love! During your normal activities only two and a half hearts will light up on your shirt. Get close again to the other (of course, he/she needs to wear this special shirt) and you are in full charge, blinking crazy like a Christmas tree. Go too far astray from the source of your affections and you’ll drop back down to two and a half hearts again. Got it? At Think Geek.

Daytona Builders Breakfast Is March 4th.

Progressive Suspension Shock Lights

At the V-Twin Expo I also discovered this new product from Progressive Suspension. Yes, Shock Lights designed to bolt onto the PSI 812 and 412 Series shocks. If, like me, you are minimalist, it’s a pretty cool idea to resolve part of your rear lighting setup. These Shock Lights can be wired into brake or turn signal systems. Chromed aluminum caps features hidden hardware and an integrated LED that blends nicely into the cap until the super bright LED’s are activated. Kit includes load balancer, two Shocks Lights and required hardware. Contact your local Progressive Suspension dealer for more information. Progressive Suspension.

Half Of UK Men Would Swap Sex For 50 inch TV

Is is sad news or not? Nearly half of British men surveyed would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, a survey found out.  Electrical retailer Comet surveyed 2,000 Britons, asking them what they would give up for a large television, one of the latest consumer "must-haves." The firm found 47 percent of men would give up sex for half a year, compared to just over a third of women.  It seems that size really does matter more for men than women," the firm said. My opinion is that this survey forgot to ask a question to women: ”would you buy a 50 inch plasma TV to your man for not having sex with you during 6 months?”.  If the answer is yes, it would mean that the 50% of UK men who would not give up sex are going to get extra-lucky while the other 50% are watching TV.  And in the US? I want to know. Are you ready to sacrifice for a 50-inch plasma TV?

She Deserves To Be Miss Sturgis 2008. Help Sasha.

I know Sasha Mullins since quite a few years and she is a sister of the road. I agree with her that Miss Sturgis should not only be an attractive woman but a real biker who rides every year to the Black Hills event. So, she wants to get the title and use it to promote great causes. Below her letter asking for your support. Of course, she already got mine.
‘My pilgrimage on my motorcycle to the Black Hills for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota every year is a high octane, fun and spirited event.  As a chrome cowgirl, I feel like I’m blazin’ trails on my chrome horse as I gallop through the wild west en route to one of the most soulful landscapes in America.  I’m entering the Miss Sturgis contest to roarrrr new meaning to the title.   To me this title is about the ride!  It’s about the rally!   And of course it’s about being a girl who lives and breathes motorcycles.
As most of you know, I love to ride my motorcycle to the rally (never trailer, fly, etc)  and I treasure the state of South Dakota, its people and its history.  I honor the legacy of the motorcycle rally and races and its co-founders Pearl and J. Clarence "Pappy" Hoel, (Mr. Hoel also founded the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club).  Pearl will forever be known to me as "The Pearl of the Rally."  I’m also all about supporting girls who ride motorcycles and seeing more female energy thundering across the country wearing big s’miles.  July 2008 is the release date of my new book called Chrome Cowgirl’s Guide to the Motorcycle Life by Motorbooks International. So, for the above heartfelt reasons I have decided to enter this contest and capture the title of Miss Sturgis and promote it for great causes.
The voting is done by people’s choice. Info is here at Miss Sturgis   I would be so honored if you would vote for me by going to this URL and clicking on my photo at Miss Sturgis Contest. You can also read much more about the contest there.  There are four voting rounds therefore Cyril will remind you this message when the next round comes up again.  The voting starts over on Feb. 16, March 1, March 15 and the final three will move to the finalists on March 29. Miss Sturgis will be chosen by April 19th. I appreciate you all so much in my life.  Thank you dearly for taking the time to read this message and for considering to vote for me! Peace and love’. New Monster Exhaust Pipes by Russell Mitchell

Russell likes bikes with an industrial look and made his mark building them this way with his own style. Huge exhaust pipes have always been a signature component on every Exile bikes for over a decade. The same style of pipes is now finally available for your 1986 – 2008 Harley-Davidson Softails. Two models are available: "Monster Drag Pipes" and "Monster Shotgun Pipes". Both feature heavy 16 gauge steel tubing and a finish that is truly show worthy. The 1¾” header pipe continues inside the true 2½” outer body maximizing the scavenging pressure, resulting in significant performance gains. Website Traffic. What Some Motorcycle Website Owners Don’t Want You To Know.

Web usage statistics are used as a tool for assessing a Website. But, few website owners and advertisers of the motorcycle industry understand website traffic. All website owners are offered free “website traffic programs” (like “Webalizer” or “Webtrends”) providing a bunch of over-inflated and unreliable traffic data.  Why? Because these programs are unable to filter and distinguish human visits from web robot visits (also known as Web Wanderers, Crawlers or Spiders).  Web Robots are computer programs that traverse the web automatically all day long to help all search engines index sites content, spammers to scan for email addresses, and many other uses. These Robots hit the website servers 24/7, don’t load pages and are wrongly counted as visits.

Beware of any website owners who give you statistics without telling you from where they come and if they are real human visits. A program like “Webalizer” even states clearly its drawbacks and write that “Their products are not designed to publicly report a site in comparison to others”.  It is our experience that Robot Visits can represent up to 95% of a website traffic for small traffic websites.  Robot Visitors don’t read, click your ads or buy your products. Their scripts just hit servers all day long. For this reason, the statistics we use are the ones of “Google Analytics” aggregating data of real visitors loading a page. In January 2008,  Cyril Huze Blog received 135,484 visits, making it the #1 Custom Motorcycle Blog in the world dedicated to the V-Twin industry.

For a banner of 120 x 90 pixels in our Blog at $475.00, it is a cost of  0.35 CENT per real visit ($475.00 : 135,484). There is absolutely no better online advertising investment you can make. Our traffic sources are: 1- Search Engines (59.23%), 2- Sites Linking To Us (19.58%), Direct Traffic of people we have put us in their Favorites folder (21.18%). Our visits come from 1- Americas (83.91%). Europe (11.55%), Asia (2.24%), Oceania (2.02%). Since the Blog launch in October 2006, 845 original news were published (no copying & pasting of articles found online, written by others, and reproduced in violation of copyright laws). We have an average of 8.5 comments per post (source WordPress), a statistic showing how much our readers are interested by all the news published, participating and getting involved through their daily comments. In addition 4750 professionals of our V-Twin Industry (Dealers, Manufacturers, Custom Builders, Medias) receive a weekly email update of our most recent posts. All published articles are accessible at all time by the reader and they are all indexed by the major Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN)

For more information about our advertising programs, go to Advertise and contact Pam Proctor at 754-544-1304 or email to: pamproctor@cyrilhuzeblog.com.

And for those who want to know more, there are 2 main methods of tracking activity: cookie-based and IP + User Agent.

1- Cookie-based tracking relies on a browser setting the cookie. If cookies are disabled, cookie-based analytics programs (such as Google Analytics) will not count the visit. This would exclude, for example, hits from a robot or spider.

2- IP + User Agent tracking typically uses log file analysis for its data. This will report much more higher numbers than reported by cookie-based tracking because of dynamically assigned IP addresses and spider and robot visits. IP + User Agent tracking free programs like Webtrends and Webalizer cannot give you the number of humans visiting a website. From this point of view, they are of no value for an advertiser.

Roland Sands Hypermotard Ducati

You already know that Roland Sands has a racing background and enjoy working and customizing all kinds of bikes. Here an example of his work on a Ducati platform. The result is called “Hypermotard” and just looking at this picture you can see that not much has been left untouched. I don’t have yet much details on engine modifications (I am sure there was), but like me you can identify many Performance Machine custom parts and a special dual exhaust. You should see this custom Ducati on the show tour starting with Daytona Bike Week in 4 weeks. Roland Sands Design.

Scorpio One-Piece Bar/Control System

Another very nice after-market product that I admired at the V-twin Expo. Made of billet aluminum, those high quality bars have integrated master cylinders, reservoirs, switches, throttle cable, wires and lines.  Everything runs through the supplied stainless steel polished riser bolts. 11/16 bore clutch that works with any style transmission hydraulic cove.  9/16 bore brake master or 11/16 if you use dual calipers. Access to reservoir is made easy by removing the bolted through top covers.  Pistons are equipped with stock Harley Davidson new style seals. Fitting inside bars are standard 10 mm banjo bolt set-up. Scorpio bars come in different styles and customer will need to provide the total bike rake and stretch to adjust the bars set-up. Classic Steel, the company behind this new product will accept to build one-off systems for custom builders with unique style projects. The kit includes: four stainless steel push buttons, grips, roller bearing internal throttle unit, polished stainless riser bolts, cup washers, bushings, all line cables and polished fittings. Optional throttle lock and built-in LED. Very sleek. Contact Jessie on my behalf at:450.699.8050 or Classic Steel.

Mike Seate About New Florida Bill To Crush Motorcyclist Thrills.

On January 12, I wrote an article called "Debate Raging About Motorcyclist Penalties" addressing a Florida Bill aimed at sanctioning bikers doing stunt riding and exceeding the legal speed limit. Mike Seate, a well known motorcycle journalist and author of many hard cover books on our custom bikes just wrote an interesting article on this subject in the Pittsburgh Tribune. Here his point of view.

‘A few years back, I wrote a book about the then-emergent sport of motorcycle stunt riding. At the time, maybe a dozen teams of young riders were making a good living pulling wheelies and other collarbone-crushing stunts on high-powered motorcycles. They taped the results and sold the videos at a huge profit. It was fun and dangerous, but in our post-MTV "Jackass" world, motorcycle stunt riding was far from a serious crime. Until now, that is.

Florida State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera (R-Miami) has introduced House Bill 137, which is aimed at stamping out stunt riding once and for all. If the bill becomes law, anyone caught stunt riding or exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph on a motorcycle in Florida will be arrested and have their bike impounded and their license suspended for 10 years. Lopez-Cantera said he’s determined to make stunt riders "fear the law." It might sound like action-movie dialogue from "Robocop," but, unfortunately, this is an elected representative talking. The state senator claims the 119 motorcyclists killed in roadway accidents in his state in 2006 motivated his decision. But he fails to address how car drivers — many distracted by cell phone conversations, drugs or alcohol, or just plan bad drivers — might have contributed to the number. This kind of overzealous, punitive lawmaking is a threat to all motorists, regardless of how we get around. Laws like this tend to be contagious and just might end up in Pennsylvania sooner or later. A proposed law might mean one thing on paper, but out on the streets, where cops can and, often, will interpret the rule of law with millions of variances, there’s no telling what they might construe as "stunt riding." Slam on the brakes too hard to avoid a crash in front of the wrong cop on the wrong day? Ten year’s riding ban and jail for you, sir. Front wheel lifts off the ground when accelerating too hard? Tear away from a stoplight fast to get out of congested, rush hour traffic? Better call the bail bondsman. You can find car drivers exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph every day, but I can’t imagine anyone jailing them for doing so. Maybe lawmakers like Lopez-Cantera wouldn’t introduce ill-conceived laws like this if they respected the rights of motorcyclists, and viewed us as something more than a group of thrill-seeking kids who need to be taught a lesson".

Pee Wee Custom Bike

Like Phil Korte of “Create A Custom Cycle”, I love bicycles from the 50’s and 60’s. And one of my favorites is this 1957 JC Higgins Flightliner Bicycle. And it just happened that it was Phil’s inspiration to build this white and red custom bike that he qualifies as a Board Track Racer, and me as a Chopper.  I am not sure about the front basket, but it doesn’t matter: building a custom motorcycle is about freedom…of expression.  It features a 113 cu engine from Ultima and a 6-speed transmission,  in a custom frame made by Marvin Cable of “Class Act MC Engineering”.  Of course, a Springer front end and pin striping (By Manny in Phoenix) are a must on this kind of ride. If like me you didn’t know about this Tombstone, AZ custom shop,  encourage the crew by visiting their website at Create A Custom Cycle.

New Power, Torque And Attitude.

The beauty of the Cincinnati trade show is not only about discovering new products imagined by my friends of the industry but also about discovering motorcycle companies that I didn’t know because their main line of business was not the V-Twin market. For example Boyesen Engineering releasing the Power X-Wing, a true bolt-on performance accessory to deliver power, torque and attitude. Taking 35 years of induction performance technology experience in top tier, professional racing, Boyesen is now focusing on applying their wealth of airflow performance design to the V-Twin marketplace. The Power X-is race-tested, and the company states that it can easily and consistently outperform its competitors. Currently available for late model carbureted and fuel injected Harley Davidson it requires no modifications or adjustments to install. Boyesen Power X-Wing

New Storz/BUB High Pipes For HD Nightster Sportster

Light up your Nightster with a dirt track style dual exhaust system from Storz/BUB. Available in chrome or black ceramic coat finish, they feature two individual head pipes with stepped diameters leading into beautifully tapered megaphones with billet aluminum end caps. Fixed steel baffles produce a mellow but powerful exhaust note and never require repacking. The pipes have individual heat shields that run from the cylinder head to the start of the megaphone and intended for rubber mount Sportsters from 2004 to present including fuel injected models. In chrome or black finish. Suggested Retail price: $965.00. At Storz Performance.

Phantom Stash Tube

Some need one, even two to carry and not lose…whatever they want to carry or hide when they ride. This one has the merit of not looking like the other boring chrome cylinders. Of course, will work well on bikes with a warrior theme. (IMO too many ‘barbaric’ bikes on the road). Anyway, just to show you  that you can find anything and everything at the V-Twin Expo. JBN Custom.

Can You See Motorcycle’s Future?

If you want to know what’s going to happen in the economy, business and investment markets, look at population trends or demographics. If we can’t see the very long term coming, at least we can observe how people are changing their way to spend money. The biggest years for births in the baby-boom generation were 1957 to 1961. Spending on motorcycles seems to peak at age 45. Harley-Davidson started to flatten out in 2006 and declined last year. Now we are all concerned about the future. The United States looks a lot like Japan and Japan has been declining for the past 14 years. That means deflation. And if you look at Japan’s economy you see a decline in prices, in value of assets and erosion of the buying power of wages. As baby boomers move into retirement, service industries will grow. Productivity gains are more difficult to produce in those kinds of businesses than in production and technology. So what should we do? Pay down debt and save. Easier said than done. You don’t want to make long-term payments on assets whose values are declining with time. Cash becomes king in a deflationary period. The paradox: the longer we wait, more we will be able to buy. So, what about our motorcycle industry? Hard core bikers will continue to ride. Bikers who are also art lovers will still want a "state-of-the-art" custom motorcycle. And between these 2 groups? No room for motorcycle fads and "fashionistas" on 2 wheels. Discretionary money just evaporated. It’s really the way I see it for a long, long time. Now it’s your turn to tell me your perspective (This lady was seen participating to the Love Ride. Picture by Sheriff)
